A good practice supported at the European level and being adopted in Italian extraction areas, aimed at protecting biodiversity and creating habitats favorable to bees, which are essential environmental bioindicators.
On Saturday, 11 October 2025, the awards ceremony for the “Dolce Miele – Wildflower honeys produced in quarries” contest took place. The initiative was promoted by the Garden Club of Perugia with the patronage of the Legislative Assembly of the Umbria Region. Colacem participated by presenting the honey produced at the San Marco mine in Gubbio, thanks to the work of colleague Fabio Marchi, beekeeper and employee of the Ghigiano plant.
Even though we were not among the top three winners, our presence was greatly appreciated by the organisers and the institutions in attendance, who recognised the company’s commitment to protecting biodiversity and the environmental restoration of extraction areas. The certificate on behalf of Colacem was collected by Antonio Berrettini, Quarry and Mine Manager.
The contest is part of the “Proud to bee quarry” project, a national pilot initiative that will be repeated every year and promotes the spread of beehives and the sowing of melliferous plant species in quarries and mines to support ecosystem regeneration. This practice, strongly supported by the European Community, is about to be adopted by almost all extraction concession holders in Italy in order to safeguard biodiversity and transform quarry areas into habitats favourable to bees, which are considered important environmental bioindicators.
There are currently four beehives at the San Marco mine. Given the site’s ideal conditions, sheltered from cold winds, Colacem is evaluating the possibility of expanding the project by increasing the number of hives to twenty and further improving the surrounding green areas by increasing melliferous species. The goal is to boost honey production and promote increasingly effective environmental restoration.
Participation in “Dolce Miele” confirms Colacem’s commitment to sustainable and innovative practices in the extractive sector and paves the way for new initiatives that bring together environment, local territory, and corporate responsibility.
